Rigging
- Block off the workspace before starting work.
- Use appropriate aids to move selected equipment from the trailer to the operation.
- Risk assessment of the assignment is documented.
- Check and make sure equipment to be transported is disconnected from electricity, drained of liquid, and movable parts secured.
- Check lifting points and lifting equipment.
- Check the substrate of the selected equipment for stability. Substrate plates must be placed as straight and flat as possible.
The rigger must ensure that all equipment is in secure working condition.
Basic prerequisite
- Rigging equipment is only used under the guidance of personnel with approved rigging courses. Rigging equipment includes jacks, hoists, blocks, pallet stock, skidding equipment, SPMT, crane etc.
- Rigger must ensure that all equipment is in a secure working condition.
- Provide adequate light to carry out a safe operation. There should always be either visual contact or two-way communication between the rigger and the signaller.
- Rigger must ensure that the goods are secured before lifting and moving begins.
- Guide ropes should be used to control long, heavy, or difficult lifts.
- Rigger is responsible for ensuring that all lifting operations and moving of goods are carried out in a correct and safe manner.
- When a crane is to be used in the work operation, procedures for the purpose of a safe lifting operation must be implemented. SJA must be carried out, and procedures and responsibilities must be documented.
- All parties involved must have knowledge of SJA and the lifting plan.
- For larger projects/assignments document the work procedure and execution of the assignment in RAMS or Method Statement Lifting Operation, with associated SJA.
- First aid and decontamination equipment must always be available.
Before the lifting operation
- Check that the lift is within the lifting capacity of the equipment being used.
- Check that the safety equipment is working properly.
- Check that you are using the correct lifting equipment for current lift operation.
- Check that what is to be lifted/moved is properly secured.
- Check the weather conditions, pay attention to ice formation and weather changes.
- In the event of uncertainty about the lifting operation, the procedure must be stopped, and the immediate manager contacted.
- Lifting equipment must be certified and marked with SWL or WLL Daily.
- Declaration of conformity must be available.
- Lifting equipment without markings must be discarded or recertified before use.
During the lifting operation / transport operation
- Ensure communication between those involved in lifting or transporting.
- Ensure visual contact or two-way communication between those carrying out lifting or transporting.
- Never perform lifting above personnel.
After the lifting operation
- Check that lifting equipment and other equipment are still in correct and proper condition.
