Working with sheet piles goes beyond normal lifting operations in terms of equipment, documentation, and risk management.
- Training – the manager ensures that the crane operator has received training and understands the risks associated with sheet pile work.
- Selection of the right boom combination with a mobile crane that has telescopic boom.
- The procedure and checklist are sent with the crane operator by the coordinator/supervisor.
- The crane operator must ensure that procedures are followed, and checklists completed before work commences.
- The SJA must also be completed in addition to the checklist.
- When sheet piling with a crane using a telescopic boom, the strongest boom combination must be used.
- For calculating gross weight, the weight of hook and pile needle, or pipe/beam is in addition to the weight of the vibro.
- The lifting capacity should be reduced by 20%. This is incorporated into SJA/risk analysis.
- If using a vibro that is not resonant free, the lifting capacity must be reduced by 50%.
- Wear ear protection inside the crane when vibro is running.
- Split pins should be used in all bolts prone to tremors.
- Always perform a check of the jam switch and camera mount
